THE LOS ANGELES SONIC ODYSSEY
ANNOUNCES

2009-2010 || Sixth Season
Concert Electronic & Computer Music
Friday, March 26 - 8 PM || Saturday, March 27 - 8 PM

Neighborhood Unitarian Church, 301 N Orange Grove Blvd, Pasadena, CA. 91103.

The Los Angeles Sonic Odyssey (LASO) presents elegant and provocative concert electronic and instrumental music with works by leading composers of the medium in which works of varying musical languages push the boundaries of expression through classical, jazz, and electronic concert music.

We are pleased to feature legendary pianist Mike Lang, who will be giving the world premiere of Planetarium, a new work by LASO Director Jennifer Logan for improvised piano with electronics. We are also proud to present the live performance world premiere of Moonlit Night:… in blossoms' shimmer by Mike Lang for solo piano, performed by Ms. Logan, who will also perform her piece Serenades in spreading shadows for solo piano. Electro-acoustic works include Carpe Diem, a intense, mysterious and alluring work by Christian Eloy (Director of SCRIME in Bordeaux and member of the GRM in Paris), and Purity, a lyric fantasy by American pioneer Curtis Roads. Carl Stone’s Acid Bop is a “walk on the wild side,” and The Sunqueen and the Emperor is a mythical tale created by Ms. Logan. … be ready for a few other surprises along the way.

Inside the intoxicating acoustic space of Neighborhood Church, works are interpretively spatialized live by Jennifer Logan, surrounding the audience with moving sound from twelve state-of-the-art loudspeakers in a unique and captivating experience of contemporary music.

Mike Lang has spent several decades as one of the premiere musical talents in Los Angeles. Mike is both a freelance jazz musician and sought-after studio artist, with a career spanning records, motion pictures and television. A 3-time winner of the coveted “MVP” Grammy award from NARAS and recipient of numerous Gold Records, Mike is conversant with every possible music idiom and form, including jazz, classical, pop and R&B. This versatility enabled him to build a career as an accompanist for an encyclopedic body of artists including Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Vince Gill, In Sync, Milt Jackson, Lee Konitz, Diana Krall, John Lennon, Arturo Sandoval, Barbra Streisand, Josh Groban and Frank Zappa. Mike has also played with some of the biggest names in jazz, such as Lee Ritenour, Oliver Nelson, Bud Shank, Don Ellis, Shelly Manne, and Stan Kenton.

He has recorded more than 3000 scores, working with virtually every major film composer including John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, James Newton Howard, Henry Mancini, Elmer Bernstein, Hans Zimmer, with numerous screen credits for solo appearances. He has premiered jazz piano concerti written especially for him by Byron Olson and Brad Dechter.

Mike has written compositions for jazz notables including Stan Getz, Herb Alpert and Dave Grusin and has recorded a jazz CD entitled “Days of Wine and Roses: The Classic Songs of Henry Mancini.” A new recording project with David Paich is in development.
